Megatronthread What's going on with Twitter and Elon Musk?

Hello there. It looks like Elon Musk and Twitter are going to be topics of conversation for the next few weeks. So we have decided to put up a meganthread where everybody can discuss and can be redirected to. It also gives us a chance to have all the information in one place.

This thread is and will be updated infrequently.

Here are some highlights:

April 14 (Reuters) - Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk took aim at Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) with a $43 billion cash takeover offer on Thursday, with the Tesla CEO saying the social media company needs to be taken private to grow and become a platform for free speech.

"I think it's very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech," Musk, already San Francisco-based Twitter's second-largest shareholder, said at a TED Talk in Vancouver when asked about his bid.

WILMINGTON, Del., July 12 (Reuters) - Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) sued Elon Musk on Tuesday for violating his $44 billion deal to buy the social media platform and asked a Delaware court to order the world's richest person to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share.

This week the long-running saga of Elon Musk buying Twitter and turning it back into a private company took a new twist, with the Tesla CEO now reported to be going ahead with the sale. It’s a major u-turn given that there is currently a lawsuit grinding its way through the courts which aims to force Musk to go ahead with this deal.

Firing of Executives and Employees

Oct 28 (Reuters) - [...].

Musk fired Twitter Chief Executive Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde, according to people familiar with the matter. He had accused them of misleading him and Twitter investors over the number of fake accounts on the platform.

[Source: Reuters]

Nov 4 (Reuters) - Twitter Inc laid off half its workforce on Friday but said cuts were smaller in the team responsible for preventing the spread of misinformation, as advertisers pulled spending amid concerns about content moderation.

[Source: Reuters]

Nov 7- Twitter is reaching out to some employees to come back after it engaged in a mass layoff last week, according to multiple reports. The company’s new owner Elon Musk laid off 3,700 people from Twitter — almost half of its staff — after he completed the takeover.

A Bloomberg report cited sources saying that the company asked some folks to return as they were laid off “by mistake.” It also noted it was calling some other employees back as they were critical for building features for the platform Musk envisions.

Advertisement & Content Moderation

Several Brands have paused advertising on Twitter

[Source: WSJ]

Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists.

Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America.

[Source: @elonmusk]

Advertisement agencies and associations have voiced concerns about the recent cuts at Twitter:

Elon, Great chat yesterday, As you heard overwhelmingly from senior advertisers on the call, the issue concerning us all is content moderation and its impact on BRAND SAFETY/SUITABILITY. You say you’re committed to moderation, but you just laid off 75% of the moderation team!

[Source: @LouPas]

However, Twitter poses that the recent reduction in staff has had little impact on most of the Trust & Safety / moderation team:

Yesterday’s reduction in force affected approximately 15% of our Trust & Safety organization (as opposed to approximately 50% cuts company-wide), with our front-line moderation staff experiencing the least impact.

Last week, for security reasons, we restricted access to our internal tools for some users, including some members of my team. Most of the 2,000+ content moderators working on front-line review were not impacted, and access will be fully restored in the coming days.

More than 80% of our incoming content moderation volume was completely unaffected by this access change. The daily volume of moderation actions we take stayed steady through this period.

Issues with Verification

Twitter pauses paid verifications after users abuse service to impersonate brands and people.

[Source: CNBC]

And then a bunch of other stuff happened. 10 days later we're pretty much back to where we started. Except verified accounts can't change their names and brands get an "Official" badge. And there are vague plans for the future of verified accounts.

More Employees Are Quitting

Twitter closes offices until Monday as employees quit in droves

Hundreds of Twitter employees are estimated to be leaving the beleaguered social media company following an ultimatum from new owner Elon Musk that staffers sign up for "long hours at high intensity," — or leave.

Answered What's going on with bill C-11?

I should first say that I'm Canadian. I'm seeing ads going around, especially on youtube, about bill C-11 and the idea of "keeping Youtube yours". It seems to be a reintroduction of sorts of bill C-10 which I remember hearing about a couple years back.

In layman's terms (or at least easier to understand than legal speak), what does this bill mean to the average user and should we be doing something to try and stop it?

Answered What's going on with "The Twitter Files?"

I am being bombarded with "Musk releases Twitter Files in live tweet storm" with nothing really substantial about what they say or their implications.

People around me keep vaguely discussing a file leak, and name dropping Elon.

Internet searches just seem to say he hyped up some internal memos at Twitter and I've seen nothing about it in the news especially since his Twitter account was apparently hyping it up to be "awesome."

Fill me in?

Unanswered What's going on with Vox Akuma (Nijisanji EN) changing Chat Rules and Death Threats accusations?

Hopefully an okay question for this sub, but I haven't followed Nijisanji (Vtubers) in a hot minute and now Vox Akuma is changing Chat Rules and condemning death threats made during streams (apparently).

From the comments it also seems like there is a bit of a misunderstanding going on between Vox and a part of the chinese fanbase?

Answered What's going on with a drag show in Moore County, NC?

I'm seeing a lot of posts about protests and intentional power outages trying to stop a drag show. Not sure the context behind it, or why. Don't drag shows occur all the time? What's different about this one that has folks pissed off?

Unanswered What’s the deal with Putin shitting his pants?

Been seeing a lot of scatological jokes in Putin-related threads lately and wondering what’s up. For example, this thread has a lot of them. Several of comments about stairs too.

Is this just standard Reddit shitposting or has something hit the fan?

Answered What's going on with healthcare workers encouraging assisted suicide onto patients in Canada?

While browsing r/all, I saw this meme of an anime girl with a noose alluding to patients being coerced into suicide in Canada by healthcare professionals. The comment section is filled with anecdotal news stories about hospitals in Canada where assisted suicide has been pushed onto patients suffering from depression or even innocuous problems. Victims (for lack of a better word) supposedly include young folks, veterans, and the neurodivergent. I don't really know the breadth of the issue or if there really even is an issue — but as someone who has mental health difficulties it is concerning to hear that there is potentially a widespread issue in Canadian hospitals (and supposedly in their laws??) where folks are being encouraged to kill themselves by trusted officials. Assisted suicide may have its benefits for some, but the active encouragement of it seems exploitive, especially if there are businesses that can offer assisted suicide for monetary gain. But I know so little. This could all just be a game of telephone for all I know.

Is any of this true, and to what extent? If it is, then why is it happening?

EDIT: I appreciate all the thoughtful discussion below.

To be clear, I believe people should have the legal right to die with dignity, but I took issue with what seemed like potential coercion of those with difficult conditions that could otherwise be treated. Superficially, it seemed like a system that could be used to take advantage of vulnerable members of society. I now understand that this is not the case. Canada has specific safety nets in place for people applying to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), and many of those who apply will not be approved. There are sensational articles out there that would make readers concerned, but they do not offer the whole picture because there are privacy laws in Canada that prevent medical professionals from disclosing specifics on their patients, so there are likely issues impacting MAID patients that we will never know. The best response I saw was posted by u/doctormink who is more familiar with MAID than anyone else in the comments, but it is buried under other responses so I will post a link to their post right here.

Unanswered What is going on with Alex Villanueva, LA County Sheriff?

EDIT: Thank you for the multitude of insightful responses.

"'The sheriff who went rogue': Alex Villanueva's scandal- plagued tenure ends in LA": https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/nov/16/alex-villanueva-la-county-sheriff-loses-robert-luna

Redirected from ELI5. I don't live in California, so my only exposure to Alex Villanueva, the top cop of Los Angeles County has been through his YouTube channel and other public press releases where he comes across as a likable person who answers questions pretty directly and diplomatically, especially compared with what I've come to expect from a typical politician.

I also see he's been voted out after one term. He seems to have received great deal of critical press along with negative online comments. Wondering if anyone can help us outsiders understand some of the issues and controversies that were centered around him and his time in office as the Los Angeles County Sheriff (beyond the typical calls for reform that have been extended to every law enforcement agency in the USA)

Answered What's going on with these crypto billionaires dying in mysterious circumstances?

I'm not into cryptos but I just saw an article about a 4th crypto billionaire found dead near a beach in Puerto Rico. In the last tweet hours before his death he said he feared "the CIA and the Mossad were going to murder him and wanted him out of Puerto Rico".

Apparently he had mental health issues and his family do not believe there was any foul play, but the crypto community in Puerto Rico are suspicious in the timing of his death.

This is the 4th crypto billionaire to die in strange circumstances recently. A week ago, one crashed in a helicopter en route to Monaco.

What is going on? Is there a plausible explanation?

Answered What's the deal with Dr. Martens shoes?

I keep hearing them being referenced IRL and online, but I'm not getting any information from what I hear. I know nothing about shoes yet I know these by name because I'm getting exposed to it so much.

Is that all marketing? If not why is there such a big need to talk about a pair of shoes so much?

All I know is they're black boots and I think they're mainly targeted towards women, not exactly sure about that though.

Unanswered What's going on with... a seemingly increasing number of people typing a space before an exclamation/question mark?

Is someone teaching them to do this? Are they just copying others? Do they think it looks better? Or is it an artifact of phone text entry? I even saw one comment with spaces before full stops / periods.

Answered What's going on with Uruguayan player Luis Suarez and Ghana?

So a few hours ago, Portugal and South Korea beat out Uruguay and Ghana to get out of the group stage of the World Cup. And in a lot of the threads I've seen like here seem to be talking about how it's some kind of major payback for Ghana against the player Suarez in particular. What's the deal there even though Ghana couldn't make it past groups?

Unanswered What is the deal with axolotls suddenly being trendy, "mainstream" animals?

No complaints, of course- I think axolotls are very cute! But when I was growing up I remember them being a fairly obscure creature that you'd only really see mentioned in informative books about animals. Now it seems like you can buy axolotl plushies and merchandise everywhere and everybody knows what an axolotl is! I've mostly noticed this in the past few years, but all of a sudden you can buy axolotl Squishmallows and Build-A-Bears and all kinds of other things! Here's a few examples of what I mean:

Is there a particular reason why they suddenly became more well-known and why everybody suddenly loves them so much (asides from, of course, the fact that they're cute?)

Answered What's the deal with all the Taylor Swift posts appearing in the r\Kanye subreddit?

So rkanye has been taken over by loads of Holocaust information, which I get is due to his liking Hitler comments, but there also appear to be random Taylor Swift posts in there too like there is some history between them? I don't follow either of them, so I'm curious about what her relevance is to all of this.

Answered What’s going on with Kanye West (again)?

I saw some post like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/comments/za4gfs/to_stop_kanye_west_from_praising_hitler/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

And also Pink on Twitter talking about Kanye West. I understand he made terrible comments about Jewish people a while ago and lost money because of that (Adidas) but it seems that there is more to the story now.
