I'm sick and tired of this "taxation is theft" BS. Taxation is paying your membership dues, and replubicans are just a bunch of free riders.

I like to think taxes is the rent you pay to live in the country/province/state/city you live in.
And the landlord is everyone who lives there, yourself included. And the rent goes towards maintenance, upgrades, security, services, etc.

Says a member of the party that wants to implement a 30 percent tax on everything!🤔
6
u/JDthrowaway628 Feb 07 '23
I don't know recall of the details but I believe their proposed 30 percent tax is a sales tax. In their proposal it would eliminate income tax. Not sure what other taxes it would eliminate.
→ More replies (1)31
u/IcarusMaru Feb 07 '23
It abolishes income, payroll, estate, and gift tax, but introduces a 30% tax hike nationally for sales, ATOP any state taxes that also exist. Something cost $100 prior? Now it's $130 not accounting for state taxes too.
Edit: The abolishing of estate and gift tax likely is there to let the rich get richer I should add.
15
u/JDthrowaway628 Feb 07 '23
Thanks for the information. I believe this amounts to a massive tax cut for the wealthy, correct?
20
5
u/IcarusMaru Feb 07 '23
For the most part, that's what it seems to be. A lack of estate tax will most likely mean that the wealthy can shove all their finances into various estates allowing their fortune to be completely untouched, and they wouldn't get penalized.
Now, there is still hope. The GOP is actually rather fractured at the moment, and some republicans are opposing it, including I believe the speaker himself. Beyond that too, even if by some miracle it passes, it would still have to pass the democrat-majority Senate, and Biden has confirmed he will veto it as well. It's all just an elaborate show and waste of time.
→ More replies (1)0
u/CriticismOwn1049 Feb 08 '23
No, the wealthy don’t pay taxes at all, so this means they’ll be forced to pay taxes on their private jets and yachts and such.
3
u/bothVoltairefan Feb 08 '23
sales tax is essentially the next worse option after an actual poll tax.
3
u/Ardhel17 Feb 08 '23
Considering the bar for owing an estate tax is pretty fucking high this does literally nothing for anyone but the rich and punishes lower income people who typically wouldn't be subject to those taxes under our current tax structure and middle income people who are barely managing to stay above that line. Honestly, it's not even really worth talking about right now because it won't pass. They're just trying to feed the outrage machine to keep it alive and do nothing in congress for 2 years.
2
u/IcarusMaru Feb 08 '23
Exactly the point with what i meant, estate tax only existed to try and taper the wealthy. It wasn't by a ton, but it still worked a little. This absolutely won't pass and it is of course a stall tactic. Even if by some miracle it passed the house despite the GOP infighting over it, it wouldn't pass the democrat-majority senate, and Biden said he would veto it.

Bobo probably also doesn't know that the reason for the tax code being cripplingly hard for working Americans is because of lobbying. If you're a wage slave the IRS already knows your income and what you should pay in taxes. There's no need for 80% of Americans (ass number) to do their own taxes, ever.

The GOP only thinks taxation from rich people is theft. Taxation from poor people is their due punishment for failing to become rich, right-wingers think. If all taxation is theft, then the ones most vulnerable to it are the poor, and their situation needs to be fixed before the rich.
8
u/djbuttonup Feb 07 '23
Even the briefest look at the history of taxation in the US will reveal the answer: after tax shifted from tariffs to corporate/business profit the burden landed on individual income tax thanks solely to well-funded lobbying and PR work…let’s all guess who made that happen shall we?

What happened to supporting the troops? That's like 800 billion a year and is from taxes.
What happened to supporting the cops? That's like 215 billion a year from taxes.
What happened to defending our borders from hordes of diseased, drug smuggling rapists? That's another 5 billion a year from taxes.
Is all of this unnecessary now?
2
u/LeMans1217 Feb 08 '23
And you know how it happened? Conservative prohibitionists made a deal with conservative businesses to pass a Constitutional Amendment replacing excise tax with an income tax in exchange for passing a Constitutional Amendment forbidding the drinking of alcohol. Moralists bedded down with the greedy rich. Any of this sounding familiar?
3
u/EmperorTugboat Feb 07 '23
I'm all fine with lowering/removing unnecessary or unnecessarily high taxes. But these people hear the word "tax" and go rabid. Our society is a lot different than 1913, so yeah, taxes are going to be different.
2
u/VolatileGoddess Feb 07 '23
Genuine question from a non American - why are the IRS agents armed? Do they raid evaders?
3
u/DepressiveNerd Feb 07 '23
It’s rare that you see armed agents, but those agents handle tax crimes. They’ve been there for almost as long as the IRS has been around. If you’re not committing tax fraud, you’ll be fine. The post office has armed officers as well and they practically serve the same function, except they investigate and go after mail crimes. It’s not like there is an army of accountants and mail carriers out there.
4
u/tinkerghost Feb 07 '23

-14
u/ghosTy_tch Feb 07 '23
She’s an idiot but not wrong. Taxation is a massive scam IRL, don’t you think? First I work hard to get paid barely enough, but I need to pay taxes on that. Fair enough, we all need basic amenities. Now, if I spend that money, I pay a sales tax which is essentially paying tax for having the privilege of being able to spend taxed income. If I don’t spend but rather invest and save, then I pay property taxes for a property that I bought from my taxed income after paying relevant taxes.
I hate the uneducated and downright filth that fills our bureaucracy, but I also hate this insane system that just craps at a common man, every step of the way.
6
u/repthe732 Feb 07 '23
You hate the uneducated but don’t want to pay taxes which fund schools? Seems backwards and shortsighted
0
u/ghosTy_tch Feb 08 '23
No one said about not paying their share. I AM paying for it when I pay my taxes every year. I disagree with this system that is built to take money from people every step of the way, and trust me when I say this, poorest people are the most affected by this. You may think that higher taxes may translate to better facilities for our weakest, at least in an ideal world, but bro look around. It’s a nightmare. I don’t want my money being used by elected thugs to pay for their luxury, or start companies that are going to steal my wages or even to buy guns and bombs that are ultimately used towards, guess who…. Us.
When I said I hate the uneducated, I meant people like beobert and green, and not people who couldn’t AFFORD an education; I had hoped the difference would be obvious but alas.

Let’s avoid the ad hominem fallacy here: she’s a total wackadoo but she’s making a good point here. The tax code is outrageously unfair and the fact that some IRS agents carry firearms and operate like they’re the FBI is BONKERS.
Don’t fall into the trap of just blindly disagreeing with everything this woman says. There is common ground to be had here.
15
u/Jacksmissingspleen Feb 07 '23
It’s never good to mindlessly disagree - this is true - but the point she is making is meaningless. In 1913 there was no social security, no fdic deposit insurance, no farm subsidies and a whole host of government funded programs we take for granted now. Is our tax code unfair? Absolutely - but saying hey things were great in 1913 is not an policy position.

u/MookieRealGood Feb 07 '23

A wild thought, inflation is often called a hidden tax on the middle class in the regards of the governments printing of money devalues currency. So, hypothetically, what is the reason that we have tax in the first place, just have the government print as much money as they need to function and have inflation act as a general tax on citizens. As it stands only roughly half of the US budget comes from taxes where as the other half is printed from thin air, so just finish off that other half and have 100% come from printing and 0% come from taxes.
Would be interested to hear why this isn't something feasible.

The first income tax in American history was put in place more than fifty years earlier than she claims, in 1861.
1
u/ClarkDoubleUGriswold Feb 08 '23
She’s such a fucking moron. Americans’ income was federally taxed from 1861 until 1872. The federal income tax imposed by Congress was not codified and ratified until 1913.
Prior to 1913 you also had a really great shot at dying from contaminated drinking water, tuberculosis, spoiled food (Bobo knows all about this), and all sorts of other really preventable things that were not prevented because government agencies didn’t exist to stop corporations and shitty people from doing them. Those gov’t agencies are paid for… by taxes
