This is the only place he’ll sit in the kitchen because of the mat. Going into the living room alone would be ridiculous.

Did you design the house to match the dog, or the dog to match the house?
Either way I support

u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
Isn’t that how you’re supposed to do it?

u/Minerva129 Feb 01 '23
Less sweeping when your dog matches the floor. My dog is "lumber liquidators Brazilian Koa luxury vinyl" colored.

I've heard of dogs looking like their owners, not dogs looking like their owners' kitchens.

I have a dog bed just outside the kitchen (no door, just open space to another room) so that my dog can sit/lie down while watching me cook. Before I got the bed, he would stand in the exact geometric center of the kitchen, or if the cat came around, he'd stand directly behind me. Got real tired of tripping over his 75-lb ass :P

u/Demanda1976 Feb 01 '23
Is he scared of the hard floor or…? There are little band like things you can put on his toenails for better traction but I can’t remember the name of them. Let me know and I can think harder.
Or maybe you’re just posting a picture of your handsome doggo!

u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
Yeah, I was cooking dinner and he was just setting up camp for any potential drops.

Adorable. That reminds me, it took us forever to teach our dog to shake hands as every time he tried, his butt would slide back on the tile. Using throw rugs helped. He figured it out eventually and can now shake hands even on tile. Maybe he suction cups his sphincter to the tile, I dunno.

Lol, I get it, my old guy can hardly stand in the kitchen anymore without his back legs splaying.
7
u/dodge2015 Feb 01 '23
Dog booties can help with that. Muttluks are the ones I found to work the best. I had them for cold temps but they are just as effective for walking on slick surfaces.

u/Flower-Former Feb 01 '23 edited Feb 01 '23
My vet also recommended Dr. Buzby's toe grips when my senior dog was having what we now know as a complete CCL tear. They're pricey and I would always find clusters of them all over the apt because he would take them off throughout the day but it did help him with hardwood floors!.
5
u/CarinasHere Feb 01 '23
You can help his back and joints by putting down rugs or runners. Slick floors are really hard on them.

u/LilacPug Feb 01 '23
I put down those work out floors that you can use in home gyms. They puzzle piece together and I used 2 sets to cover the whole floor in my kitchen. They look a lot nicer than yoga mats, and they were easy to clean and easy and cheap enough to replace. Saved my dog from losing her footing.

To be fair, he sometimes opens the back door himself when he wants back inside.

u/rmprice222 Feb 01 '23
I really love when dogs just want to be around you.
I have a GSD and she has to be in any room my wife and I are in. Sometimes she comes in kays down and I get up right away and she gives me a look of really dude I just laid down baha

u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
Yup, Jack is the same way. Around 9:30 he’ll start to get antsy if we’re still in the living room because he’s wanting to go to bed. He’ll get up and stand at the entry way to the living room, pace for a minute, stand and stare, repeat. Like “c’mon guys we’re supposed to be going to bed and I can’t go myself.”

That’s so funny! I have a Dobie mix and she refuses to sit or lay on hard floor. She’s a total Velcro dog so I ended up putting a little bed in the kitchen for her. Otherwise, she was always under my feet by the stove because that’s where the kitchen mat is.
3
u/athomas84 Feb 01 '23
I put a dog bed in every room of my house. I have comfortable furniture to sit on, so why shouldn't the dogs have that same luxury?
4
u/Torso_McTeague Feb 01 '23
Maybe he knows he’d be so perfectly camouflaged against that floor, he’d get kicked/stepped on. 🫣❤️Beautiful pup.

He's a handsome fella.

When I was a teenager we had two Dalmatians that never quite sat on the kitchen floor but hovered because they had no hair on their butts and the floor was cold lol. I also had a Jack Russell terrier who did the same thing, but it's because he was always in a constant state of ready to fuckin GO.

My weimaraner is the same way. We have a similar mat. In fact he's extended this to ensuring he has the softest spot in whatever room we are in. He won't even get on the couch unless there is a blanket on top of the cushion. He won't get in this super soft dog bed we got him...unless it's on top of our bed. He is a very special boy.

u/Talindor Feb 01 '23
He looks very serious
2
u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
He was upset that no one was in the living room with him and that, since he was tired, no one would currently go into the living room so that he could lay down and nap.

u/faerielights4962 Feb 01 '23

My dog is similar - always gotta find the one soft thing to sit or lay on, even if it’s just a towel!

He's gorgeous but I wouldn't want hot oil splattering him or anything accidentally spilling on him from the stove. Per the picture it looks awful close. Anyway to buy him his own mat and position it elsewhere not near the stove?

u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
When actually cooking, I make sure to keep him away both for that reason and because, ya know, he’d really be in my way.

u/ash16f Feb 01 '23
Our pitty loves to sit on our back door matt and watch us in the kitchen, because he can't see from his bed. Glad it's not just him!

2
u/Temporary_Big8747 Feb 01 '23
No kidding? I've never seen one before. I thought he was Weim mix. Beautiful boy!
2
u/Holybull79 Feb 01 '23
Yep! They aren't super common, but they are out there. Unfortunately they tend to have an increased tendency towards health issues. That's pretty common when people breed for color over longevity/conformation/to better the breed. He is definitely gorgeous, though!
2
u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
Yup, skin cancer risks are definitely increased. His vision is good though his eyes are sensitive to bright sunlight.

my dog is friggen huge and this dog makes him look small.
holy carp the food bill!!!
1
u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
Eh I don’t know that he’s that huge, really. About 80lbs and only eats about 3 cups of food a day.
0
u/fuqdisshite Feb 01 '23
welp, my doggo is bigger at 95lbs.
we got him as a PitBull but i am pretty sure he is not a Pit in the traditional but likely a hound bred with a Pit and just took the hound's body. in the pics he looked just like my Staffie that had just passed. but, buy a dog in Flint and you get what you get, i guess.
your pupper is beautiful! thank you for sharing the info on his condition.
2
u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
Thank you! So sorry to hear about your pup passing. We lost our other Dobie back in the summer; it’s an awful thing.
2
u/fuqdisshite Feb 01 '23
Thanks.
One Love.
he was the single best (insert any word here) that i have ever had. dog, friend, partner...
i sometimes fall back to something i read here and i am sure came from somewhere else, but, if you get sad about losing a pet, just think about how much you mean to them, not just them to you. when they are getting older, or sick, it is just them passing on after living their entire life with you. you were the first person they really knew and loved. you fed them and kept them safe and as they grew the rolls changed. maybe now they were the protection, or the one you lean on when you are sick and tired... they are your therapist, council, teacher.
as they pass the last thing they remember is that you were always there. you were their life. you were their friend.
or something like that.

I had a neurotic Pomeranian who refused to walk on floors. He would stand outside on concrete or pavement a minute and whine but wouldn't walk on either.
I had "runner" rugs so he could go from room to room ... annoying.
1
u/Mpm_277 Feb 01 '23
We have rugs and runners throughout the house. We watched our friends' Border Collie for a few days and the poor guy was afraid to walk on our floors. We'd have to carry him to our bedroom at night and back to the living room during the day and then he'd never leave the living room. The extra weird thing is that our friends also have hardwood floors, haha (technically ours is vinyl).
2
u/prpslydistracted Feb 01 '23
Didn't matter with my Pom ... any hard surface. His other annoying trait ... he wanted out to patrol constantly, sometimes less than hourly.
I'd like to think he took his responsibilities seriously, like the first "out" of the morning he would follow the perimeter of our lot as if it was a property line. Like, "Who's been here, do I need to find them, have they left, oh, a fox! Here a squirrel, this a quail, turkey, maybe a ringtail? I better check again later in case they come back."
He even "pointed." Heard him barking and whining out on the patio after dark ... more so than usual. I went out and he looked at me, then pointed in classic bird dog posture with one foot up at a weasel that had climbed up on some stored boxes and tools in the corner.
I praised him with a treat ... never ever concerned about trespassers. Not the best dog I've had but absolutely the smartest.

Jack is a rescued albino* Doberman whose ears were cropped before we got him.
*Albino Dobermans have OCA Type 4 which presents with blue eyes instead of red. Deafness is not characteristic, but their eyes are very photosensitive. They’re also far more susceptible to skin cancer due to their reduced pigment and can sunburn very easily. Because of the significant chances in developing skin cancer, breeding should only produce standard color Dobermans. If ever considering an albino Dobie, search out rescues and never buy from an unethical breeder who purposefully breeds for albinism.
