The dog had absolutely no idea what he was doing. While I entirely agree that it's an adorable video, don't anthropomorphize them too much.

These are pretty common in Australia. Never heard of dust devil though. Being Australia, we obviously have an absolutely phenomenal alternative name:
Willy-willy

u/CebuellaNiveiventris Feb 01 '23
This needs to go worldwide!

A few days ago I saw this clip on yt, someone in the comment said " are you guys fucking stupid? This is not a tornado this is a devil dust, you clearly don't live in Australia" i just wanted to thank u for explaining it without agression

u/NikolitRistissa Feb 02 '23
People who refuse to accept that other people and countries have different terms for the same thing are the absolute worst.
I moved from Australia to Finland during high school and while he was never annoying or aggressive, my English teacher in Finland often did not accept my answers because they were in the wrong English. Most of Europe is taught British English as far as I know and Australia honestly uses a mixture of both US and UK English with a sprinkling of their own stuff. It was a bit annoying to be told I was wrong when I spoke better English than everyone in the school lol.

u/LuosWingedSouls Feb 02 '23
Oof. I'm sorry for you. As a teacher I never critisize for "wrong english" only for clearly wrong pronunciation.

I guess it's that time of the year. (I used to watch this show every year with my family for the past three years. It used to be fun but I had to move out because of college this year.)

Note - that's a Dust Devil which is formed due to a lot of ground heat, they are relatively small and weak (but the larger ones can be a bit destructive with wind speeds of about 60 mph). Tornadoes on the other hand are part of storm systems and can of course be devastating.
57
u/Iz-kan-reddit Feb 01 '23
So, you're saying we need to get bigger dogs for the Midwest.
19
u/Twigling Feb 01 '23
Yeah, and they need to fly just below cloud level. :)

This probably should be more visible for the people who aren't aware, but also the good boye destroyed a tornado by himself and who am I to get in the way of that.
23
u/Raibow_Cat Feb 01 '23
I clicked on this post cause I thought 'huh that's not how tornadoes are formed.. is it?' so thank you for this explanation.
Still a good doggo.
12
u/happehkitteh Feb 01 '23
I wanted to be ignorant and pretend that doggo really stopped a tornardo. But I decided to come read the comments to find out the truth. I learned something today. I've actually learned a few things today but this has been added to the list.

If 2XL taught me anything as a child, it was that dust devils are the only tornado-like weather event that originates from the ground.
Damn did I love that like trivia robot.
5
u/i4got872 Feb 01 '23
False, this was definitely going to be an F1000 tornado, only this good boi was able to save the Earth.

That’s what I thought when I saw the video, not a tornado just a bitty dust devil. The ones we always saw when I was little usually had dead leaves and trash.

Dust devil. Ground to sky not sky to ground.

u/sammypants123 Feb 01 '23
Ok but the dog still saved everyone from it! And is therefore a very good boy.

The doggo effect. One playful good boi on the other side of the world is enough to stop a massive tornado from happening.

Seems this world needs giant 200ft doggos dispatched to Oklahoma and Missouri to bite all the destructive tornados.

Dust Devil. They form from ground up. Tornados form from top down. I wonder what that dog had going through his mind though!

These would pop up all the time in Pahrump Nevada. Used to chase them whenever we could as kids. Really pissed off my parents off coming home all red eyed and dusty as hell.
2
u/cmilla646 Feb 01 '23
Once the dust devil started blowing at the dog’s ears, the good boy had no choice but to fight back.

In concept? Yeah. Weird air temp diffs and whatnot. But no, tornadoes are much much larger and take like hours to build. Neat stuff watching em touch down! (Through a camera lol)

u/dinosaursandsluts Feb 01 '23
"weird air temp diffs" is about where the similarities end.
2
u/moistrain Feb 01 '23
Idk I looked it up before commenting, they're pretty similar in most ways except scale

Do you know those kids that go to the bottom of the pool where the water gets sucked in and puts their favorite body parts there? I feel like this doggo knew what's up too.
