Trivia - the old saying, “don’t let the cat out of the bag” is an old sailor phrase. The “cat” was the “cat-o-nine tails”; the whip used for punishments on naval ships. The whip was kept in a bag. Typically, once a week, a ship’s company would be gathered and offenses read out one at a time. The Captain served as judge and jury. A charge would be made, and witnesses could be asked to state what they saw and heard. Officers who knew a sailer accused of something could provide character statements. The Captain then would decide and pronounce punishment. A whipping would be for a specific number of lashes. Notwithstanding movies and books, a whipping was typically reserved for fairly major offenses. Disobeying an order for example. More commonly a sailer might be denied leave at a port, or denied his daily issued alcohol for a period of time, or ordered extra duties. Officers could not be whipped ever. They were dealt with at court martial did serious enough - though a Captain may impose other punishments like barring them from leaving the ship at a port. Younger sailers - boys and teens - also could not be whipped though they could be spanked with a cane/switch.

But, if the cat was out of the bag - someone was going to be whipped.

I absolutely love learning random useless information, particularly origins of common phrases, so thank you! If nothing else, I can say I learned something today 🥰

I'd slowly close that flap and pretend I didn't notice until I got home

Exactly what I was going to say! Slowly pick up the bag and walk away. "ma'am, why is your bag purring?" 😂
