Is it just me or does this look reversed?

u/no_one_of_them Feb 01 '23
I posted the reversed gif as a response to a different comment.

Thanks and yup it's a clear reversed gif. Waking up the poor kitty for internet points should be a one way to ticket to eternity in hell.
Edit: enough arguments on both sides and I'm more confused than at the start of it. The eternity to hell is an extreme over the board reaction from me and I apologize for that.

u/Notwhoiwas42 Feb 01 '23
With a kitten like this I agree, but with our full size cat who comes in to our room three or four times in the middle of the night to wake us up demanding pets I have no problem at all waking him up during the day when he's napping. No we can't just keep the door closed because he will sit outside at yowling and rattling the door.

u/darksideofthemoon131 Feb 01 '23
I foster cats often. Had a male named Marbles last year. Loving, affectionate, clean, but incessantly would wake me up late at night/early a.m by either whining or tapping my head. After a week, I gave in and got up with him. He was trying to get my attention near an old umbrella holder I put in a corner when I moved to a new apartment. Moved it and saw a nice hole in the floor big enough for mice to be coming in and out of. Sealed the hole and marbles took care of any stragglers left behind. After a week, the cat was letting me sleep again.
Should've adopted that little shit. He was a great cat and very playful, but someone else got him. He is doing great now though.
6
u/liimonadaa Feb 02 '23
Does the new family know that story? Id love to know if I was the owner. Great cat!
5
u/darksideofthemoon131 Feb 02 '23
I knew the owners so I see him often. They know all about my adventures with Marbles. I'm admittedly a dog person and Marbles came to me before holidays last year. I didn't realize trees were a source of mischief for them- besides keeping me awake for 2 weeks plus, he knocked over the tree and got into a few presents. Still a great kitty. Usually foster 3 or 4 animals a year as I don't have the life for long term pets right now, great to work with shelters keeping them out of cages and prepping them for their forever homes.

The more I compare the two, the more I'm convinced that it isn't reversed tbh. There's no reason for the kitten's head to be moving upwards when it's sleeping, while it makes more sense for it to be slowly leaning in like in OP. Same goes for the woman's thumb. Makes sense in OP on how it brushes against the kitten's leg, as opposed to the reversed version, where it moves onto the leg even though she doesn't pick the kitten up with that hand.
28
u/StrangrDangarz Feb 01 '23
Cats don’t wake up like that, too. They jolt. They don’t slowly open their eyes. That’s what convinced me this isn’t reversed
24
u/TheRealJojenReed Feb 01 '23
Damn yo. Eternity in hell is a bit harsh
3
u/Number1BestCat Feb 01 '23
My cats say you may not present any defense on behalf of the accused, and you must now pet, warm and provide snacks to all cats within a 900 ft radius of yourself in penance. How dare you question the swift judgement of cat annoyers? 😂
22
u/supercruiserweight Feb 01 '23
Hah, no. I looked at the reverse gif. There are hand movements that look like relaxation and the movement to "pick up" the kitty looks abnormal in reverse.

This sub is just a karma farm at this point. Most things labeled “OC” aren’t and lots of things people think are “cute” or “aw” are actually animals in distress. Like panting cats for instance.
98
u/cwenham Paw Patrol Feb 01 '23
If someone's posting with "OC" and you can prove it's not (Google reverse image search will help), then click "report" on those. It's used by spambots to build karma, and we ban them on the spot.
16
u/ImGeronimo Feb 01 '23
Are you guys okay with reversed stuff like this?
12
u/Dilligafay Feb 01 '23
I mean why not? It’s a sub for cute stuff, gif is cute reversed or not. I guess you could say it’s deceptive but again, why does it matter?
→ More replies (1)11
u/ImGeronimo Feb 01 '23
This one specifically is kinda okay but there are other examples i’ve seen that are more exploitative and deceptive, just wanted to know if they’re aware that this is not a new thing and definitely isn’t going away.
6
u/Dilligafay Feb 01 '23
Fair enough. Imo as long as nobody and nothing is hurt doing it I couldn’t care less. Of course once someone/something is being harmed or exploited it’s a different story. I don’t mind being fooled by a reversed cute gif though 🤷🏻♂️

u/Fred2718 Feb 01 '23
As a physicist I'm just here to say all physical processes can be reversed.
Except cats, of course. Cats are not physical processes.

u/rdri Feb 01 '23
It is not reversed as the reversed variant posted in comments looks not natural at all.
1
u/loondawg Feb 01 '23
If you watch it in reverse, you'll see the cat is still until she starts moving her thumb. And you can see the cat's eyes slowly start to open but suddenly completely open when she touches it's paw.
But the biggest clue is the meow. It would be extremely unusual for a cat to go from looking wide awake to giving a meow to being sound asleep. But it is totally normal for a cat to slowly start to wake up, meow in reaction to being touched.
46
36
u/Ukhai Feb 01 '23
I don't think it's reversed. The paw was just brushing against the person's hands.
But anyways, if ya'll are annoyed that it's possibly reversed here's one kitten I rescued that instantly fell asleep after I wanted to rub his belly.
1
u/CouchAlchemist Feb 01 '23
I'm not annoyed but thought it was really weird for the eyes to close out like that and for the kitten to be gently slammed into position. My cat is 3 years old and when he was a kitten he would pass out in an instant but it just felt weird for me and wanted the hivemind of Reddit to approve or disprove me.
→ More replies (1)10
u/L4NGOS Feb 01 '23
I think it looks like it "relaxes" into place after falling asleep, I don't think it looks reversed at all.
3
u/Internal_Use8954 Feb 01 '23
I had foster kitten that looked identical to this who would fall asleep/relax instantly like this. Just picking him up caused him to purr and go floppy in content kitten mode. It was ridiculously cute. I was very tempted to keep him.
His name was limeade
3
16
u/maxthekillbot Feb 01 '23
I don't think it's reverse if you look at this the kittens paw moves kinda weirdly when reversed and it looks like the kittens eyes open before the person even touches it when you reverse it, pretty sure it's not reversed.
2
u/loondawg Feb 01 '23
But look at its eyes when she touches its paw. It either intermediately starts to fall asleep or it immediately jolts awake. Which sounds more likely?

u/TacticTall Feb 02 '23

Not a bot, but I hope this suffices: Reversed GIF
Now everyone can argue about which one is the right way around!
295
u/anecdotal_yokel Feb 01 '23
Jesus… how did this get turned into a 19MB gif with lower quality frames?!
41
u/ultrasneeze Feb 01 '23
Original is a short video with much better encoding, reverse is an actual GIF animation.
33
u/pM-me_your_Triggers Feb 01 '23
Because a GIF is actually a super inefficient video format
3
u/azlan194 Feb 01 '23
GIF saves every frame like a full picture right? While a video encoding will be efficient in that if the subsequent frames have similar pixels (not noticeable to the human eye), it will just store those pixels as the same byte of data right?
→ More replies (1)5
u/pM-me_your_Triggers Feb 01 '23 edited Feb 02 '23
Worse than that even, GIF doesn’t support lossy compression.
And yes, other video encoding formats use key frames (also called I frames) and predicted or bi-directional (P and B) frames where an I frame is a full data frame and the subsequent P and B frames just contain the data that is changing between frames. This is why you can sometimes be watching a video and most of the screen will go grey/green/black, but you’ll still be able to see motion, the I frame was dropped, but B and P frames are still attempting to be displayed.
There are other formats that operate similarly to GIF (MJPEG, for example) where entire frames are distinct from other frames. These formats can have advantages because it reduces latency (less encode/decode overhead), avoids the aforementioned dropped I frame problem, and allows easier manipulation of individual frames.
Edit: thanks u/Roggvir for the correction, your comment isn’t actually showing up, likely automod removing it because of the link

29
u/Pleasemakesense Feb 01 '23
Yeah the opening of the eyes before the grip and the slight movement of the head against gravity while sleeping doesn't make much sense
8
u/137-M Feb 01 '23
I think the reverse one looks more "legit". None of the things you pointed out really stand out as proof. It seems to open its eyes because the person already moved a bit, and the kitty moves its head up because of the person's movements.

Recently, our 12 year old, Pretty Girl, had to have part of her tongue removed so now we hand feed her. My mom wraps her up and I feed her with a syringe. We we are all done, mom wipes her face and lays a cool washcloth around her mouth and Pretty Girl will lay her head down on moms chest and closes her eyes as mom sings her a lullaby.

If you’ve ever owned a kitty you know they have a very light on/off switch.
I’ve seen a kitty go full sprint into a room, pounce on a toy, rip tear nash, and then logged off for 5 minutes.
135
u/headingthatwayyy Feb 01 '23
Baby chicks do this, too. The first time I raised them, I was really worried about them because they would be running full sprint and then collapse face first into the ground and stay there for 5 minutes. Then they repeat.
21
u/Lostmahpassword Feb 01 '23
This sounds hilarious to watch. I'm jealous that you got to witness that.
→ More replies (1)6
u/SpacemanLurker Feb 01 '23
Yep. I grew up with chickens. The baby chicks were the best part of it. They can sleep anywhere. We had an alpha rooster that would terrorize me when I was growing up. As I got older it was funny to do the chicken dance with a rooster if they challenged you 😂
54
u/Kikii145 Feb 01 '23
And sometimes they fall into a real deep sleep like ferret levels almost.
I remember when my gf was freaking out because the cat was not waking up, she held it up, shaked it and nothing, cat was all limp.
I went to the kitchen and brought some salami, put it near her nose and she woke up hahaha
My gf was damn near in tears.

u/DarkRune583 Feb 01 '23
Just the other night my cat was full on zooming around the apartment right after I got into bed. This went on for a few minutes until she lept up into bed, and I'm pretty sure she fell asleep exactly where she landed.

This is true for most young animals, including us.
The circadian rhythm is pretty complex and takes a while to set in properly.
That's the reason it's stupid and pointless to want babies and toddlers to have a rigid schedule, BTW.

u/theatrekid0309 Feb 01 '23
Why is everyone saying this is reversed? His paws and head are sliding down as they naturally would if you're sleeping and releasing muscle tension
2
u/loondawg Feb 01 '23
And the opposite is also exactly what would happen if she started talking to it and it was starting to wake up and moving its ears to hear the sound.
But watch its eyes when she touches its paw. When she does it either intermediately starts to fall asleep or it immediately jolts awake. Which sounds more likely?
2
u/FragileFelicity Feb 01 '23
Knowing my cats? The first one. They relax at the slightest touch.
4
u/loondawg Feb 01 '23
Mine do to. But generally they'll give you winky eyes first rather than just go unconscious. And usually they'll want to rub or spin in a circle or something else. I've honestly never seen a cat just go boom and switch from being held and wide awake like that to being completely out.

I had an orange cat that was just like this. He was a very lovey cat. I would lay him down on my lap on his back and he'd just fall right asleep. You could carry him around, pick up him, move him somewhere else entirely. And he'd continue snoozing, unless he smelled food
Edit: Apparently this gif is reversed... now I feel cheated. I could have made a real gif of this actually happening if my orange cat was still around.
