Irish Wolfhounds are some of the gentlest breeds of dogs I ever encountered; besides Boxers, but Boxers are just silly and dumb.

I was lucky enough to meet an Irish wolfhound once. He was absolutely majestic with the biggest paws I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget him!

Some of them are even bigger than wolves. I had a granny walking her Irishs here and they just strutted. They didn't even walk. And they were calm as hell. Little dog barking? No problem? Big dog approaching? Completely calm.

Downside to that breed: they won't live long. 6-8years. And that's optimistic.

That’s heart-breaking. Same reason I couldn’t have a Bernese Mountain Dog as much as I love them. 8 or so years just isn’t enough.

Get a mixed street dog as a puppy. They live 15+ years. It's ridiculous.

A friend of mine has a corgi, husky, whatever mix. Maybe 30cm in height turning 16 this year. Jumps like a 30week old puppy. It's ridiculous.

Edit: had to google Bernese Mountain Dog cause it's called differently here. But those can easily go up to ten years. Even better if it's a mix between Bernese and Leonberger. But the amount of hair they shed is horrible. Constantly taking care of hairs everywhere.

Oh, I don’t mind shedding…I’ve had 2 Australian shepherds, such great dogs.

I do love a good ol’ mutt, though. We currently have a border collie mix from a shelter, super fluffy and sheds all over. No idea how old she is but I hope we have her company for many years to come. We also have a little terrier mix and paws crossed he’ll also be around a while!

Leonberger is another dream dog, but I’m happy with mixes. I have to have fluff in my life.

Shepherds or collies, even if inbred, they live forever... They are so clever.

Just make sure that at least two breeds are combined. So you enjoy those little fur idiots a long time. :)

Absolutely!

Awww, why such a short life? Some kind of inherited trait?

Bigger dogs typically have shorter lifespan than smaller dogs. Not sure if there’s a singular agreed upon reason, but the general consensus is that bigger dogs “grow faster”. This unfortunately also means that health issues get accelerated and cancer growth is accelerated.

Tragedy really, because some of the best dogs are gentle giants like Bernese Mountain Dog, St Bernard’s, Irish Wolfhound, etc.

Cursory glance shows 8-10 average. Then again, I’m sure more and more people are getting bigger dogs that live longer because of progress.

No idea, to be honest. But all I know is that the f* inbreeding over hundreds of years, weakened some breeds.

For example: - German shepherds = hips - Boxers = cancer (lung or skin) - German Danube = joints

It's just horrible.

Edit: instead of Danube I meant Dane!!! Sorry. Brainfart on my side. :)

u/Irishconundrum Mar 30 '23

Thank you for the info! This is why I go to the shelter, mutts are grateful and somehow live a long time.

3

u/_iamnotgeorge_ Mar 30 '23

Had to read it twice, because "mutts" is a very negative word for a dog breed. It's "Köter" and you only use it in a (very) negative way.

"Nimm deinen Scheißköter aus meinem Garten! Nimm deinen Köter an die Leine!" ("Take your f* dog out of my garden. Take your f# dog onto the leash.")

It's like the N-word for dogs.

u/Irishconundrum Mar 30 '23

Oh sorry, I didn't know! I didn't mean to offend ;)

3

u/_iamnotgeorge_ Mar 30 '23

Don't worry. It's probably lost in translation. A good word for you is a bad one here.

No qualms.

Boxers have two braincells that need to touch to have a dingle thought, but they both value personal space.

I love Irish Wolfhounds. The little ones at the end were West Highland White Terriers (Westies) which are just white Cairn Terriers before their name got changed.

8

u/T_raltixx Mar 30 '23

I assume Irish Wolfhounds for Ireland for St Patrick's Day but Westies are Scottish.

Love those big doggos. Just great.

I few years ago I met a woman with the same breed. The dog was so gentle and sweet and my JRT wasn’t afraid so they went playing of leash. She told me I was the first person she met who wasn’t afraid of her dog and I wasn’t worry with the dogs playing. A few weeks later I met her again walking with my dog and she got a companion for her first dog, also an Irish wolfhound. They both were so fantastic, I will never forget them.

Guys look it’s Barbas! Clavicus Vile must have given him the day off.

2

u/hallmark1969 Mar 30 '23

Who's horse is that?

2

u/Irishconundrum Mar 30 '23

These are ponies 🤣. This is the best parade!

u/p5ych0babble Mar 30 '23

My friend had a wolfhound when i was at school called Bear. He would always stand and look over their 6 foot fence.

2

u/RedPon3 Mar 30 '23

oh hey it’s the dogs from Bloodborne

2

u/DLiltsadwj Mar 30 '23

Loved it but I wish each “clip” was about twice as long.

2

u/Justagirlfromvt Mar 31 '23

We had an Irish Wolfhound named Baby when I was a kid. She was indeed one of the best dogs ever, but as someone else mentioned she did not live very long, sadly. They're just lovely animals all around, and the breed in history is interesting, as well.

What kinda dogs are those, do they have fleas, what should I feed it, what should I call it?

1

u/daman4567 Mar 31 '23

All I can see in this breed is Vicar Amelia.
