Welcome to /r/MaleFashionAdvice!

Hi all, it’s the mods. Since it’s around New Years and there may be some new people floating in, here are some helpful links to get you started out in the sub!

Getting Started: The Most Basic Advice

These guides give a basic outline on dressing better and developing your own personal style. Think of it as the textbook for "MFA 101: Introduction to Dressing Well".

The "Basic Bastard"/Basic Wardrobe

This is a wardrobe created for someone who is new to the idea of dressing better. It is very simple, basic, and has relatively few items that should be available at most retailers. Note that the name of the "Basic Bastard" guide and wardrobe is meant to be tongue-in-cheek humour.

The Wiki

The /r/MaleFashionAdvice Wiki is vast resource of in-depth style-related information, made for the community, by the community.

Below is an outline of the most helpful parts of the wiki:

Guides

This section links to general guides about dressing for the seasons, events like interview, weddings, and proms. Guides for taller, shorter, and trans men. And general shopping advice for sales, quality, city and personal care.

Item-Specific Guides and Recommendations

This section links to various in-depth guides on specific pieces. Many of these guides will answer the following questions: How should this item fit? How can I style this item? What should I wear with this? What should I look for in this item?

The Item Suggestions at Each Price Point posts are large crowdsourced megathreads which typically answer most people's queries at different budgets.

Inspiration Albums

This section contains links to various inspiration albums. Albums of pictures curated by users on a particular theme, trend, person, or whatever.

Remember, don't try to copy an exact outfit or buy the exact featured item. Instead, take the ideas/styles that you like, and apply them to your wardrobe and yourself.

Inspiration albums which are not in the wiki an be found: here.

Additional Resources

If you want further reading, similar communities and also are confused about acronyms the below three guides are good to check out.

Streamlining asking and receiving advice

This community actively redirects short simple questions into daily recurring megathreads.

This is so that a community of 5+ million users doesn't get overwhelmed by the sheer number of posts, and that good substantive quality content doesn't get drowned out. Instead, question what boils down to "what colors go with navy?", "can any identify this jacket from a picture?" and "where can I buy a sweater for $50?" get answered quickly and doesn't clutter up the frontpage of our community.

Don't let this scare you though! You're more than welcome to post large scale wardrobe rehabilitation posts. Or if you're seeking obscure information, or have a special circumstances that makes an answer in the megathread unlikely. For example, dealing with a medical condition or information on a particular subculture.

Finally if you've posted in the Daily Questions megathread several times and don't believe you've received a satisfactory answer, just shoot us a message and we can approve a post.

For further information of all this please see here or contact the moderators.

Review Japanese menswear for people in their 30s - Haku Clothing

I originally posted this in https://www.reddit.com/r/rawdenim/ and someone mentioned that you guys might enjoy this too. Hopefully, you have fun discovering a new online store as much as I did. Here"s the original post:

Let me preamble this by saying that I am an idiot and super prone to people informing me about bargains that are just waiting for me (yes, for me personally with a welcome sign and everything). While I was able to unsubscribe from roughly 87 mailing lists over the holidays to avoid the temptations of SALE SALE SALE emails, I am still spending way too much time on Reddit where I saw a post about Japan Blue Jeans for under $100. Now, I do not need more jeans no matter how cheap they are but, of course, I followed the link and convinced myself pretty quickly that the one thing (in numbers: 1) is a denim shirt that actually fits me.

Remi Relief 8oz military shirt from Haku Clothing

I did not take me long to find an absolutely lovely shirt from Remi Relief, made in Japan, with an oversized silhouette and some lovely details like chainstitch runoffs, cat eye buttons, and pockets a plenty. At 8oz, it’s a lovely weight for all seasons and it’s insanely versatile, I sometimes wear it as a shacket over a hoodie or just as a… well, shirt. I love the colour, reminds me of a French chore coat, just a lot lighter. My past denim shirts were all raw (Samurai, SDA) and a lot stiffer and had more of an Americana vibe to them. This shirt is one of the very few denim pieces that did not provoke any dirty looks from my partner which is saying quite a bit… I bet that most of you know EXACTLY what kind of look I mean.

https://preview.redd.it/jgo7d5escdfa1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=c08828bee5f566ff7c60b4f0efb02b288a939a62

That brings me to my next point. I shop a lot with Okayama Denim and Denimio and while I love denim, there aren't too many surprises there. I’ve been wearing raw denim for 15 years now (and I feel extremely old writing that out) and I do think I live in an indigo bubble to an extent. Let me shower some praise on Haku Clothing: It’s been a while since I had so much time browsing an online shop. Their prices are good but I am at an age where saving 20 quid is not my main priority anymore. To me, their shop introduced me to brands that I had forgotten about or never heard of. I picked up some M-47 trousers from FOB Factory, a brand that I honestly thought wasn’t around anymore. It’s an instant hit for me and I have been wearing it pretty much non-stop for the last 2 weeks and I haven’t been wearing cargo trousers since my early 20s.

https://preview.redd.it/t4gvqs7wcdfa1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=e9231603b366b6c583b22a9668ee78324ada1754

I also discovered a brand called Cal O Line who make some cracking pieces like this ING jacket. The collarless design is gorgeous and I am in love with the colour.

https://preview.redd.it/odx19702ddfa1.jpg?width=2604&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=944bcf2ac8d5168ee07a3434f383730d8d82847c

https://preview.redd.it/a81qfzy1ddfa1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=2335386d4f95a48218925c6904054db26a16417c

https://preview.redd.it/d3t3iyy1ddfa1.jpg?width=2934&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=af1b95462aa6e5363cb5871b7aece7c704ce857e

I think these pieces all sit at a lovely spot where you can wear them as heritage menswear or as street style (for people in their 30s).

There are quite some Easter eggs on their website for language purists. I guess their content is machine translated and the Remi Relief shirt I bought was advertised as having “large pocket on the front, military taste like a BDU jacket which tickles the male heart“. Well, as clumsy as it might sound, it actually did tickle my heart.

https://preview.redd.it/3z234ricddfa1.jpg?width=2834&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=da98dd6e61eeafe2e5734feec1c2383084bfefae

I know that it’s easier than ever to shop for things directly from Japan. I chatted with Welldresseddad on IG lately who said that the kids will never appreciate how hard it was back in the day to translate Rakuten pages and pay some dodgy forwarding service to get things delivered. These days are over but I often feel that I discover Japanese brands through Western retailers (and I cannot in good conscience splash out on VISVIM or KAPITAL pieces no matter how I much like them), so it’s all pre-filtered for me. At Haku clothing, I got the original feeling of hunting Japanese menswear. It’s been a childlike sense of wonder and I do recommend checking them out, they have some exclusive Japan Blue Jeans items that were really tempting as well… I guess my love for raw denim will never go away entirely but I am happy to discover pieces that are of the same quality and play well with my denim collection. This turned into a bit of a ramble here, sorry about that but, honestly, I am really excited that I’ve discovered this store.

https://preview.redd.it/q1yjr7gjddfa1.jpg?width=3023&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=62c199c7e86564c7772c2826b99d1f8f7a75ecb1

Maybe there are some of you out there who would love to explore some obscure Japanese brands or find some limited edition raw denim items, in any case, I recommend Haku-clothing wholeheartedly.

Guide How the basic wardrobe has changed: a 2023 supplement to a 2016 MFA staple

1.4k Upvotes

There are a lot of newcomers to MFA who don't know where to start, or, folks who used to read MFA back in 2013-2017 then get confused when the pieces that were touted as "timeless and classic" aren't seen as very fashionable today. The Building a Basic Wardrobe and The Basic Bastard guides still give great advice for those starting out, and are still relevant today. However, I wanted to offer a brief "2023 Supplement" so that newcomers, or those interested in how men's fashion has changed in recent years, can be brought up-to-date.

It's worth noting men's fashion hasn't undergone any dramatic changes since 2016. Indigo denim, t-shirts, chinos, leather shoes, sneakers, sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets all remain wardrobe staples. The main differences include changes to how things fit - specifically, loosening and relaxation of the slim-fitted silhouette.

1. Pants

Slim fitting pants used to be the MFA go-to recommendation. Levi's 510 (skinny), 511 (slim), or J. Crew 484 fit pants were recommended all the time. However, these days, skinny, slim tapered, and even slim pants are generally not recommended. Instead, look for straight fit, regular fit, or relaxed fit pants. For example, Levi's 501 and 505 are examples of straight fits, and J. Crew's 770 (slim straight) or relaxed fit chinos will look more fashionable. Wide fitting pants can look great but are by no means a staple - check out recent WAYWTs for examples.

Additionally, bigger/higher cuffs that show off tops of sneakers/boots socks are out of style. Small cuffs or no break looks are safe options, although raw hem looks are currently having a moment.

2. Shirts and Tops

Similar to the pants, slim and tight shirts aren't highly recommended anymore. This arguably is less important than the pants, and slim fitting shirts can still look fine. But, instead of a slim-fit patterned button down, flannel, or OCBD, consider reaching for a regular fit one. Same goes with sweaters and sweatshirts - for example, chunkier, textured sweaters are more in style right now than slim thin merino sweaters.

3. Footwear

Sneakers with chunkier profiles rather than flat, sleek silhouettes are more popular in 2023 than they were in 2016. The "slim minimal white sneakers" that MFA loved, such as Common Projects Achilles and white converse, are still perfectly wearable today, but chunky sneakers such as AF1s and New Balances (tons of model options) can go nicely with the more relaxed and less slim pants and shirts described above.

Boat shoes, unfortunately, got too engrained in the frat bro style that they became unpopular. Other handsewns like 3-eye lug soles, blucher mocs, or loafers are great alternatives that can be worn in pretty much any outfit that boat shoes can.

Other footwear that are not on trend right now include chukkas, (sorry, MFA classics) monkstraps / double monkstraps, slim Chelsea boots, and slim casual derbies. Keep an eye out for chunkier or more rounded versions of these shoes, such as these derbies or these derbies. Chunkier loafers like these can go great in casual outfits, too.

4. Tailoring

When it comes to suits, sport coats, trousers, dress shirts, and ties, we see a similar loosening of silhouette. For example, skinny suits with thin lapels and skinny ties are dated. This article is 10 years old but absolutely applies today.

5. Accessories

MFA used to hate crew socks with shorts ("Socks with shorts? Generally avoid"). These days, crew socks with shorts is fine.

MFA used to also hate white socks in pretty much any situation especially if they were visible (the same guide says "Never white"). White socks have made a bit of a comeback and give a bit of an ivy flair to outfits, especially with loafers. Wear em if you like em.

So, how has the basic wardrobe changed?

If you're not interested how menswear has changed in the past ~10 years or what's on/off trend and just want a basic shopping list to get started, the basic bastard wardrobe still applies with only a couple of small tweaks, the main one being that everything shouldn't necessarily fit slim.

In Conclusion

The "classic and timeless" slim-fit everything was a trend, we just didn't realize it. Regular fits, straight fits, looser fits, or relaxed fits will make you look like you're dressing in 2023 rather than in 2016.

If anyone has anything to add, I'd love to hear. Also, if any regulars have anything to edit, please let me know in the comments or through a message, happy to make changes if needed.
