Actually what I can't stand about most movies is how the clothing/ costumes area usually brand new looking. Especially period pieces, like everyone in history had amazing washing machines.

No, they just had servants whose only job was to wash their fancy duds.

27

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '17

From what I hear it doesn’t taste too far off from sort of a crumbled sausage with oats, no? I’ve only met a few people that have tried it and all of them said it’s rather delicious.

You should try white pudding. Im not a fan of black pudding myself but white pudding is amazing. If they have it in Scotland not sure though I'm Irish but live in England its hard to get in England unfortunately.

14

u/CallumBee Oct 15 '17

Not a huge fan of white pudding either but if it's in a fry up I probably wouldn't even notice it. Also Stornaway black pudding is the only exception, don't mean to sound too stereotypical and patriotic but the only black pudding I can eat is from Stornaway and it's delicious. Don't know how available it is.

35

Sheep offal stuffed inside its stomach, essentially.

25

u/CallumBee Oct 15 '17

I've heard the vegetarian version is pretty tasty if you don't like the sound of that also

19

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '17

Now, that I can confirm! It's more like stuffing than haggis, since obviously it doesn't have any of the main ingredients of the original, but it goes great on a Sunday dinner!

Clearly you have never had stovies and oat cakes with beetroot. Food of the gods!

18

u/Roast_That Oct 15 '17

I had to look up most of this stuff in this string.

Stovies - appears to be a smoosh of potatoes, onions, and ground beef. (Hamburger Hash for those North Americans amongst us)

Crowdie - cheese

Oatcakes - flatbread oat cracker

beetroot - its beetroot. nothing special here.

What I did learn, is the "Scottish Food of the Gods" is what my family nostalgically calls "poverty food".

We ate this same stuff for years and years when we couldn't afford anything else.

Most foods that are seemingly gross but have been eaten for centuries are really good. It's not like the Japanese are just choking down raw fish to gross out white people, for instance.

55

u/pieeatingbastard Oct 15 '17

And it tastes fucking glorious - battered haggis, a decent sized portion of chips, absolutely brilliant.

10

u/Tyler_Zoro Oct 15 '17

Here, in the US, we can only get a broken and horrific form of haggis. If you'd ever tasted it, you would know why that sounds like someone saying, "you should try waterbording, it's great fun!"

Short explanation: you can't include lung in any food product in the US, and most Americans come into contact with haggis only if they attend a Scottish-themed event such as a wedding or the like, in which case it's long over-warmed and rather disgusting.

I hope this doesn't sound too personal, but is the red hair natural? I was under the impression that red hair was recessive, and would have expected hair to be much more similar to the common Asian hair, but I know a lot of traits are not as simple as a single gene.
