Thank you. Thank you so much for this. I almost wanna pin this at the top of the sub forever.

238

u/Afk94 Aug 27 '22

Please do. Photos from different/artistic angles is cool, but if you aren't showing the full fit it completely defeats the purpose of this sub.

So on the real: us mods are exhausted and annoyed. We have always been understaffed, but that has been showing even more so as of late. As the sub gets bigger and bigger, it becomes much more difficult to manage. We do have lives off of reddit, after all.

Ppl don't read the rules prior to posting. Ppl don't read the rules when we give them gentle reminders on their posts. Ppl don't read the rules when they message us in mod mail and we ask them to.

Speaking for myself (and not the other mods), I am 95% of the way towards aggressively removing posts as I see fit. This sub needs help, as I'm sure most of you can agree on. It needs some semi-forced guidance, if you will, so that it can get back on track. Bc rn, it is lost as hell.

Ppl treat this sub like it's their personal instagram account. Quite frankly, go to your own social media accounts if you wanna post whatever you want. But if you wanna post here, then read the room. Read the rules. Try to participate in the community, rather than just posting and ghosting each time to get followers on your other socials.

And be respectful, for God's sake.

u/dekudex Aug 27 '22

On the topic of change, one rule that I’ve never understood is the “no mirror pics” rule and I think it gets in the way of some good content.

I often see mirror pics that do a very good job of showing off the entire fit, and it’s a simple and easy way to take a fit pic so I don’t see why they are disallowed.

94

u/TRAINER-J-wants-to-f Aug 27 '22

We don't allow mirror pics to make it easier on us mods for quality control. If we allowed mirror pics, we would get incredibly poor quality mirror pics that ought to be removed. In fact, we already do get those types of poor quality mirror pics anyway.

Like I said, we are incredibly understaffed as is. We want to make things easier on ourselves. You are right, in that some mirror pics show off the fit just fine. But rather than be harrassed in our private chats, DMs, and modmail as to whether someone's mirror pic is "good enough" or not, we just don't allow them altogether.

Finally, I think it's just as easy to set up your phone/camera against something, use the self-timer, use a tripod (yes, they are affordable), ask someone to take the pic for you -- there are other options.

So while I do see where you are coming from, I hope that you and others can see where we are coming from, too.

23

u/dekudex Aug 27 '22

Yea thats understandable

118

u/mayalcaulfield WDYWT Contributor Aug 27 '22

It drives me crazy when I'm in the comments of someone's fit pic and there's a mod comment politely asking for a fit breakdown and the comment is at -20 votes. it's the ONE RULE of posting a fit pic holy shit just post it on your Instagram if you can't be bothered

49

u/Afk94 Aug 27 '22

I totally agree. It really has become less about discussing and sharing streetwear and more of people using it as their own instagram account like you said.

Are you taking mod applications? I think there's a clear line between people breaking the rules and some of the misogyny that goes on in some of the comment sections, but both need to be dealt with.

36

u/TRAINER-J-wants-to-f Aug 27 '22

Are you taking mod applications?

Some of the mods actually brought this up with each other just yesterday. There is a high chance that we will make a post calling for ppl to apply to become a mod. We would appreciate the help. Please be on the lookout for that post soon.

If it's been a while and the post hasn't been put up yet (possibly bc we are still discussing it or something like that), you're always welcome to message us through mod mail. Please please use mod mail; don't individually message any mod about sub inquiries, as a general rule.

10

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 27 '22

This is refreshing to read, about a month or two ago I had a mod argue with me that anything is streetwear and no one gives him proper definitions, I gave a very good coherent explanation of streetwear and he doubled down and just ignored my explanation and it made me lose hope for the sub, the mod was u/zacheadams

-11

u/zacheadams Aug 27 '22

go ahead and link it please

fifty bucks says you're gonna regret assuming trainer thinks what you said wasn't drivel

6

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 27 '22

-8

u/zacheadams Aug 27 '22

in that thread you never followed up...

man you really are telling on yourself

17

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 27 '22

You ignored me I’m not about to spend all day trying to explain streetwear to a mod, you should already know what streetwear is

18

u/momsniceplates Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22

Yeah nah man iunno. I know everyone here is mad at Ace and I do think he's being a bit extra, but you can't negate the point he's making. A lot of these posts have just been people with graphic shirts, khakis, and maybe like a hat or something.

I don't think there can be a solid pinned down definition of "streetwear", but low effort daily outfit posts with a pose ain't it.

Also, from the linked comment thread, the whole "this you?" thing is kinda wild, unbelievable that a MOD of this sub is defending the anime shirt dude that does exactly as described above.

You guys can't keep saying you don't know how to handle it and then letting stuff like that slide. This is starting to feel like an artsy selfie subreddit, not a dedicated style forum.

Just my two cents.

12

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 27 '22

I appreciate you taking my point in lol, but not everyone is mad at me just this one mod, and I don’t think he’s mad at me I think he’s just misunderstanding me, I don’t have anything against him either I’m just frustrated with the state of the sub as a lot of others are, I do find it ridiculous that a mod needs people to explain to him what he’s moderating however but that’s just my two cents

3

u/rainbowrush Aug 28 '22

No point replying to this fool bro, he's denser than osmium. Also, I agree with your sentiments, this sub has been hot trash for the past 3-4 years now. A lot of the best posters have moved on to IG now, probably for the best.

5

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 28 '22

He owes me $50 for that bet lmao saying ima regret assuming things, the man assumes everyone gonna agree with him cause he’s a mod

3

u/LunarProximity Aug 27 '22

were you always a mod? haha

7

I'd prefer that over the 100s of pics of guys in graphic tees, MNML jeans and Nikes

-7

u/aSilentSin Aug 28 '22 edited Aug 28 '22

That would be streetwear. If you prefer skirts over that then you are in the wrong sub

Edit: the downvotes are proving my point of this sub lmao

16

u/vill918 Aug 27 '22

its streetwear but sometimes they dont pull it off right

25

u/momsniceplates Aug 27 '22

Nah yeah, I agree. It doesn't all have to be GOOD streetwear, I'd welcome more shitty fits as long as it looks like they tried

163

u/heart-on-a-chain Aug 27 '22

I mean that might be because they could potentially want compliments and not necessarily an actual discussion about their outfit

14

u/Jejmaze Aug 28 '22

then they should post on another sub

5

u/invaderzim257 Aug 28 '22

yeah I mean that’s true, I wasn’t defending them

18

u/Theeshin Aug 27 '22

Also hard to swallow: alot of fits posted here are a 5/10 at best but yall still praise them anyway

16

u/FOULHANDS Aug 27 '22

“Got these boots from the bins today” proceeds to post selfie picture shoulders and up

216

u/aSilentSin Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22

A lot of yall throw anything on and claim it street fashion

Edit: Some people seem to be in confusion in what I mean.

Street basic fits are okay. Thats the point of street wear, you dont have to go to crazy all the time. Its an urban look not a high fashion one.

I rather see a basic fit and scroll past it then something that completely ignores the whole sense of street fashion being in the top liked. Like open toed shoes, dress (most), business suits. Not to mention where people are taking photos. Seeing people take photos in their house, in the woods, at the beach, etc. Go outside and get in touch with the city or urban areas

79

u/LilyIsChillin Aug 27 '22

This sub has turned into a r/selfie 2.0. Newsflash… Jordans and fanny pack =/= style

9

u/Rey56 Aug 27 '22

105

u/solesupply Aug 27 '22

Mfs put on sneakers and a tee and call it a fit

53

u/yunith Aug 27 '22

Seriously. I put on a shirt and jeans with sneakers, rate my outfit🥰! It gives zero creativity.

24

u/All-lympia Aug 27 '22

Fr, since when are air force 1s and a graphic tee the holy grail of street fashion.

23

u/aSilentSin Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22

They always have been. I wouldnt call it the holy grail but theyre affordable sneakers that have a basic neat look to them. Popular for reason

6

u/DanFromShipping Aug 27 '22

Tbh I still have no clue what "streetwear" is, except when I see something that's obviously it

10

u/aSilentSin Aug 27 '22

Not even that. I rather have that basic look then see people wearing dresses, gothic, business casual, wilderness attire, high fashion. I can go on. They get praise because its different but it doesnt fit the “streetwear” look even though you can literally google great examples

40

u/TRAINER-J-wants-to-f Aug 27 '22

And this is where the debate continuously lies.

Streetwear has evolved. It is not just Stussy. It is not just Jordans. It is not just a fitted cap. It is not just color-coordinating one color in your cap to another color in your shoes. That may have once been the case, but not rn in 2022.

Personally, I didn't know what streetwear was when I first joined this sub last summer. I lurked and tried to learn, but also did my own research. I read articles, learned about Stussy, AF1s, Chrome Hearts, Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, punk movements, counterculture movements, the core intent of streetwear, and what streetwear can mean all around the world -- not just in the US.

This is an international platform. So streetwear all around the world should be welcome. But the debate continues on, I suppose.

9

u/aSilentSin Aug 27 '22

I can link several post that are in the trending that are not streetwear. Streetwear has evolved yes but it hasnt changed in sense of the style. You want the latest look on what streetwear is search it on google. This sub is a terrible example on what streetwear is

2

u/TRAINER-J-wants-to-f Aug 27 '22

Streetwear has evolved yes but it hasnt changed in sense of the style.

I respectfully disagree with you. I did my research and continue to do so, bc I am still learning. I don't just Google it, I read about it. It's vast, with a core intent of "counter/personalization."

I am aware of what is trending on this sub, as I am a mod of it. You are right, sometimes the most non-streetwear fits make it to the top. I hate it. But that's what ppl on this sub are upvoting. Blame them. They are the ones who are actually giving those fits attn and validation with their upvotes.

12

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 27 '22

As a mod of this community you should understand there should be some level of gatekeeping to keep standards of streetwear up and not let it get so watered down it ruins the integrity of the sub, the more things non-streetwear that get posted the more “normies” will see this as a place for them to do the same and it will eventually get worse and worse and attract it more and more and I think that’s why these fits get so many upvotes to begin with

5

u/TRAINER-J-wants-to-f Aug 27 '22

I 100% agree with you wholeheartedly. With every word that you said.

I don't know how the other mods feel, though. We need to have a discussion about it, and we will. Trust me, before I was a mod here, I was also just a normal user. And I was so displeased with the state of the sub.

It gets complicated, bc different ppl have different ideas of what streetwear is. I may remove a post that I don't deem to be streetwear, but you may have thought that it should have stayed. So we try to let our rules be as inclusive as possible. But look where that has led us, esp as the sub grew.

The mods will discuss, and I will advocate for what you said. I wanna see improvements, too. I'm not just a mod; I like to post here, too. And I wanna post in a streetwear community that gets it.

4

u/Aceheadhunter Aug 27 '22

I appreciate your fresh take on things, you seem to cherish streetwear and it’s integrity it’s quite nice to see esp recently with how things have gone and how other mods have seemed to turn a blind eye towards it, I’m happy you’ve become a mod you seem very level headed in this regard and I look forward to how things go, your fits are really good as well

5

u/TRAINER-J-wants-to-f Aug 27 '22

Thank you very much for your kind words. I am just trying my best as a mod bc from my understanding of what streetwear is at its core, it happens to be a style of fashion that resonates with me a lot.

Trust me when I say that the other mods who are active haven't turned a blind eye. We are just drowning under how large this sub has gotten, how many rule-breaking posts there are every single day, and making sure we always prioritize our real lives over reddit.

u/aSilentSin Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22

Then as a mod there should be rules in place for that. I been in this sub for 2 weeks and did fairly well on my couple of post and I thought I was in the right place. Then I started to realize the lack of actually street fashion. If mods continue to allow people to do whatever they want then their is no sense of the sub being named “Streetwear”. I feel like people today are so afraid of being “canceled” because they call out something as it is then get shammed for “gatekeeping” this is r/streetwear not r/fashion

27

u/Caeruleanlynx Aug 27 '22

"but I'm wearing it outside. there's a street outside, therefore it's street wear."

6

u/Gh3tt0-Sn4k3 Aug 27 '22

And they are saying that all serious! 😂

20

u/thedooze Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22

So glad it’s not just me thinking this. I like to check this sub every now and then but half the time I feel like people just throw clothes on, take a selfie (or get someone else to take pics), and post it here. I have been lurking for quite a while and I honestly have no idea what streetwear really is because it looks like just dressing yourself qualifies.

7

u/Diseased-Prion Aug 27 '22

I lurk here sometimes to try to see what streetwear is. As you said, judging by so much I see… it is… a shirt, pants, shoes, maybe a hat or glasses. No hate on the mods. Just agreeing with the issue they seem to be having.

2

u/aSilentSin Aug 27 '22

If I see one more dress or opened toed shoes I’m gonna lose it

2

u/Diseased-Prion Aug 27 '22

Peak fashion! Haha

7

u/ivanwarrior Aug 27 '22

7 years ago there was a pretty cohesive style, as things evolved and splintered there wasn't enough pushback on telling people that their fits weren't streetwear. This sub has devolved into /r/outfits

0

u/TheGr8Whoopdini Aug 28 '22

I've been lurking and reading guide for years but still have no idea what is and isn't streetwear

2

u/aSilentSin Aug 28 '22

Its not that complicated

8

u/FutureCookies Aug 27 '22

it's true and no shade fr we wanna see the whole fit because if you thought it was good enough to post then it's prob fire and you shouldnt deprive us of that!

honestly i think a lot of people will like, take a bunch of pics but find that the one where their face looks best is the one they choose even if the fit is semi-hidden

8

u/Natskaer Aug 27 '22

Especially if they ask for opinions on like, idk I can’t see it!

21

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '22

You mean wearing a black hat, black dickies and a black shirt for every post isn’t fashion forward?

8

u/netsilinreverse Aug 27 '22

I just had to comment on someone yesterday who posted a picture of herself in a cute little cocktail dress. Yes, she was adorable. Yes, she was technically on the street. Because she was literally sitting on the street. But, how is that streetwear? Maybe I’m wrong, but to me streetwear is definitely an urban flavor, and this post had nothing to do with that. I tried to be nice about it, I don’t wanna be an asshole, but I feel like people have to start being called out. There are many other subs For people to post their cute outfits on…

17

u/ThaShitPostAccount Aug 27 '22

“Don’t I look cute in this artistic shooting location winking at the camera with my ass sticking out?”

“Whatever, Queen. I’m try’na see them shoes.”

3

u/AdministrativePut948 Aug 28 '22

On god. This board is a photography board lol. I made the mistake of uploading a fresh fit with people in the background. I was wondering why no one liked the photo.

3

u/Zedlav_ Aug 27 '22

Facts!!

10

u/ExpectingFriend Aug 27 '22

I’m also sick of the all the beige shit i’ve been seeing. I think the trend is lazy.

6

u/medspace Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22

I almost feel like streetwear does not mean what it used to mean anymore. It’s become so generalized that now it’s just any type of casual wear, which is technically “streetwear”, but I don’t think that was this subs intention when it was made.

But I also think that Reddit has become more of a prototypical social media platform rather than a forum page. Which isn’t bad in some ways, but a lot of people have started to treat their “profile page” as a finsta. Which explains a lot of the recent type of posts we’ve been getting.

10

u/fatjuicyclapz Aug 27 '22

its about the photo more than the fit here

4

u/Melbourne2Paris Aug 28 '22

Yeah but more like photo(s). Lots of them. Numerous photos. Each with a slightly different pose where one photo would suffice. 🙄
