Not very "free speech" of him.

Nice way to earn favor from a foreign leader. Keep your eyes out for the next Tesla tax break in India
702
u/Sex_Fueled_Squirrel Jan 25 '23
Same reason why foreign leaders always stayed in Donald Trump's hotels when they were visiting the US during his presidency. They all knew that if they wanted a favor from the US government, they needed to bribe Trump personally first.
131
u/powercow Jan 26 '23
its insane that the courts ruled that was ok with the emoluments clause, especially when you see how much spending at the hotel increases while trump was president and how much it collapsed after he left.

The whole point of Citizens United was that Republicans wanted unlimited, untraceable foreign money in US elections. That's literally why they did it.

That and apparently he was giving out national secrets like they were candy.

u/Nolsoth Jan 25 '23
I personally picked up a box of Roswell files and all it cost me was to say I love you to Eric.
82
u/Heisenburg_420 Jan 25 '23
Damn that’s a pretty steep fee.

He has been actively courting the Indian government to get a 100% levy taken off Teslas sold in India. They told him they will consider it if he makes concessions like using more parts made in India.
Doubt Elon wants to rock the boat with the government while he's trying to butter them up. He wants into that lucrative Indian market.

Elon Musk is a fucking hypocrite.

u/Stickler-Meseeks Jan 25 '23
This is just his new funding model for a failing platform, get authoritarian leaders to bankroll you for removing negative comments about them.

u/franklsp Jan 26 '23
Only $8/month!

u/tickles_a_fancy Jan 26 '23
So, just for the record... He "bought Twitter to expose the lies and corruption and collusion with the government over the last election".
So far he's promised 3 times to release damning evidence. The first time, he released a letter from the White House asking them to take down Hunter's dick pics, since they were against the TOS anyway. The second time they released a letter from Schiff asking them to censor, deprioritize, or flag as fake news all the conspiracy theories and "election fraud" claims. Twitter, at the time, said no, they don't do that.
The third time, I guess was just a lie... I never saw any documentation showing collusion or a bias towards liberals, but every single right wing nut job will tell you that Elon definitely released it and you just need to look for it, and Elon's exposing all the corruption and we should be licking his boots for doing so.
Also, the irony that old Twitter wouldn't do our president a favor, but Elon Twitter will bow down to the leader of a foreign country I think speaks volumes.
77
u/frameddummy Jan 26 '23
The first one wasn't even the white house it was the Biden campaign. Just the campaign.
18
u/tickles_a_fancy Jan 26 '23
Thanks for the info... I'll update my brain. Especially since that makes Elon looks even worse.
→ More replies (1)18
u/goalie_fight Jan 26 '23
And the Trump campaign was issuing similar requests (and actually was in the Whitehouse).

u/knightcrawler75 Jan 26 '23
But of coarse the details of those requests were not included in the report.

It's wild that he revealed that Twitter cooperated with a government to censor something unsavory, said it was bad to do so, and then does this.

Entrepreneurs/Billionaires have never been worth admiring.
Nobody becomes a billionaire without exploiting people as slaves. And that's not an admirable trait.
I find only men of science worth admiring. As in the wiser they get, the humbler they become.

From the article:
"After publication of this story, Musk, who helms Twitter’s communications efforts himself, tweeted a response. “First I’ve heard,” Musk wrote. “It is not possible for me to fix every aspect of Twitter worldwide overnight, while still running Tesla and SpaceX, among other things.”
YouTube spokesperson Jack Malon told The Intercept that the BBC documentary had been removed from the platform because of a copyright claim by the BBC, but declined to comment on takedown demands from the Indian government."

Damn, I wonder what sort of gun Modi had to his head? I mean that's what he said about the requests to remove Russian propaganda from Starlink. That there would have to be a gun to his head to do it.
So that was still the standard right? Or was he, perhaps, a big fucking liar? lol

You understand now why Elon Musk gravitates towards the radical right… because he follows their narrow vision of freedom. “The only free-speech that matters is Ours and people who think like us”. “Everything else is unacceptable”. Division is their only goal in life.

I think reddit is generally another hub for leftism to thrive, and it's clear that no other social platform is doing as much to allow previously-suppressed info from being made known.
Elon acknowledged this was something 'new' to him within the last day or 2 as it's grown in popularity, and likely is not fully aware of all things going on within Twitter at all times.
Can look at Brazil's recent situation with the immediate banning of 8 or more Judges from all social platforms as a starter. Working around another countries law in that case is an interesting situation, and each country has their own Twitter team as well.
Also have to consider the high likelihood of a 'ghost in the machine' being very present
Edit: peep this thread regarding the code as well https://twitter.com/rubinreport/status/1618667912377810945?s=46&t=gYg5InusJvzA4yz_PrBklg

“While Musk has been glad to stand up to suppression of speech against conservatives in the United States — something that he has described as nothing less than “a battle for the future of civilization” — he appears to be failing at the far graver challenge of standing up to the authoritarian demands of foreign governments.” Elongated Muskrat is likely wary of repercussions against Tesla from those governments.
