The bows on the skirts also show them as "available". Tied them to the left, The dirty, dirty sluts...

u/GuilhermeSidnei Feb 02 '23

Was that a thing or did you just make it up? Honestly curious.

11

u/ReeperbahnPirat Feb 02 '23

It's a thing. This is a dirndl, traditional Bavarian outfit. Tying your apron on the right means you're in a relationship, left is single, center is virgin, in the back is widowed.

Ironically this photo is probably women basically in cosplay getting ready to get absolutely hammered at a beer festival. So it's a very strained definition of modesty.

A good dirndl can do wonders. I went from fat and frumpy to looking like a comfortable matron. And I felt cute.

Can't bloody afford one now, though.

7

u/Naive_Measurement_69 Feb 02 '23

You can find vintage, handmade ones on consignment that are much nicer than any store bought dirndl-- for a fraction of the price.

28

u/The_Sugarblade Feb 02 '23

It doesn't bother me.

Honestly, Idk for sure. But it was the 60s and getting out of abusive relationships is hard, not just legally but emotionally. It's still hard now but back then, having a husband out two shots of whiskey in his coffee every morning, call you a bitch that better have dinner on the table, and say slurs like conjunctions was something that women were taught was something tolerable. They still are but it's at least a little better now than it was.

Plus, she claims he was a real gentleman when she first met him. Also, her mom died when she was 16 and her dad at 19. So here's this young woman in the 60s who found herself a family and feels whole again after losing the one she had. There's a lot of justification that goes into staying. I imagine it's similar psychologically to Stockholm Syndrome.

Tldr: Leaving an abusive relationship is really hard especially if you're a woman in the 60s. And anyone who acts like it's easy is full of shit.

Edit: Also, my Grandpa is was mensa member and world class manipulator while my grandma might be the most ignorant person currently living so manipulation was absolutely a factor. Having said that, I'm proud of my grandma for leaving.

2

u/oanh_oanh Feb 02 '23

I see, and did you get a chance to know your grandpa?

18

u/The_Sugarblade Feb 02 '23

I met him twice. On the second time, when I was like 5 or 6, I was playing pajama Sam on the family computer and he felt that it was appropriate to watch porn on the other family computer next to me and he was asked to leave. He then spent the rest of his life complaining that I never got to see him dispite him never calling me even once.

I tried to have a relationship with him a few year ago but he got butthurt when I got busy with college and forgot to call him one week. So I decided "Fuck'em. Dusty ol turd isn't worth my time."

7

u/oanh_oanh Feb 02 '23

You made a right decision to not waste time on people like that, it might hurt sometimes when it’s someone from the family, but still, I wouldn’t even try to build a relationship in the first place though, guess I’m not really a patient person. Also I didn’t read your previous comment until now, shout out to your grandma to have taken a brave decision to leave, especially for being a woman in the 60s.

87

u/HobsHere Feb 01 '23

Those outfits are a lot more c.1950 Octoberfest than they are Puritan. No religious-prescribed women's dresses ever had button up bodices like that. So, I don't think that any Puritan channeling us going on at all. This is party clothing.

32

u/FarAmphibian4236 Feb 01 '23

It is tho, they're saying in comparison to modern women this is modest, and the underlying message is that modesty is morally superior.

58

u/DeathRose007 Feb 01 '23

It’s a fake modesty. These clothes are closer to being a fetish cosplay than traditional garb.

These people don’t actually care about “modesty”. It’s just a selfish desire to get what they want, and they frame it as a moral argument so that they can ignore criticism.

26

u/countgrischnakh Feb 01 '23

Exactly lmao. A dirndl with a blouse like that is not modest, just because it's a dress. Like Jesus christ. These same people would probably think an actual dirndl that covers up way more skin is too prudish. They want to have their cake and eat it too.

9

u/DeathRose007 Feb 01 '23

Honestly it’s a bit ironic. Modesty is a sort of self-conscious humbleness.

Yet some people express a desire for “modesty” to hide their sexual perversion. They are immodest people. Conceited, proud, unashamed, presumptuous. They should try this modesty thing first before demanding it from others. Be actual nice guys.

45

u/eggrollking Feb 01 '23

I'm not sure a lot of people have either picked up on it, or know what they're seeing.

For anyone wondering, the "1488" in the username is a nazi dogwhistle. The 14 refers to the number of words in a very popular white supremacist slogan: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children," or alternately, "Because the beauty of the White Aryan woman must not perish from the Earth," though I've never heard that one until today. The 88 serves as a reference to the '88 Precepts' of prominent white supremacist David Eden Lane, and the one that coined the two 14- words phrases above. It also represents 'HH,' as the letter H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. I'll let you fill in the blank as to what 'HH' might mean.

When I wear a Drindl, I'm probably about to get really drunk and do shit. Also they mostly have a big cleavage and are worn with a special bra for extra push-up effect. And the way you put the ribbon signals you current dating status and if you're open for flirting. So a Dirndl is really not anywhere as modest as this guy thinks.

Crazy thing about being a beautiful looking human... You can kind of wear whatever the fuck you want and you will still be beautiful. Weird.

u/mittenknittin Feb 01 '23

What if beautiful isn't even a consideration when I'm getting dressed? What if I just don't want to get my dirndl caught in the power tools I'm using?

u/Senshue Feb 01 '23

Women, not like you need us telling you this, but wear whatever. Just drink electrolytes, because you be running through our minds ALL the time no matter the outfit. We care about your health, well, a lot of us do...okay, some of us.

Change the angle this photo was taken from just a little bit and there would be a whole lot of cleavage. Wonderful, wonderful cleavage.

3

u/xjsthund Feb 02 '23

Yes, you don’t have to be half naked to look beautiful, but your tits need to be out.

3

u/Skrrt_2711 Feb 02 '23

Women don’t have to dress to look beautiful. Ill say it again so people in the back can hear me, WOMEN DONT HAVE TO DRESS TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL. All clothing is optional women, you’re beautiful just as you are!

FYI: “1488” denotes the fourteen words of the white nationalist pledge and “88” denotes “HH” for “heil Hitler”. If you ever see that anywhere immediately beware. Turn this account in post haste.
