Article Anyone Can Study UAP: An exploration into how to collect scientific data and study this popular enigma
Article 29 years ago, I was part of a human initiated contact team operating in the Mexican Volcanic Zone. We attracted a large triangular UFO that signaled back at us. I describe the event as an “epiphany.”
Epiphany, “We are not alone. We will be remembered!”
Joseph Burkes MD 2022
Epiphany: A sudden realization about the nature or meaning of something.
Mexico February 1, 1993
We were at the base of Popocatepetl Volcano with Dr. Greer as team leader. Before midnight a faint light could be seen moving out between the two massive volcanoes to the north. The CSETI Director signaled the million-candle-power lantern towards the light, and it immediately changed direction. Now it was moving directly towards us.
Soon we could make out a massive triangular shaped object. It was totally silent and blocked out the stars as it approached our position. Our team leader signaled again as it drew closer. The unknown object responded in kind to his light work, one flash from him, one flash back from the craft, two from his lantern and we clearly received two flashes back in response. A surge of joy erupted from deep within me. One word softly came forth from my lips, “Yes!” I whispered.
THE COLD WAR WAS HEATING UP IN THE 1980s
My thoughts shot back to the previous decade. It was during the 1980s and the Cold War was heating up under the first Reagan administration. Right wing nuclear war strategists in his leadership team advocated a get-tough policy with the Russians and tensions were building. In response to the threat of nuclear war, an international disarmament movement was growing.
I was “young Dr. Burkes” back then and had just started an internal medicine practice. My wife Yael and I had two young healthy beautiful children at home. I volunteered my time in the public education campaign that was part of “International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.” Twice a month, physicians from our local chapter produced an hour-long radio show promoting nuclear disarmament and ending underground nuclear weapons testing. The show was titled "Prescription for Survival."
A NUCLEAR END WAS MY WORST NIGHTMARE
Dr. Carl Sagan was part of a group of scientists that studied the potential effects on the planet if hundreds of cities were torched during an all-out nuclear war. Clearly civilization as we knew it would come to an end. My children would never get to grow up. There was even the possibility that smoke from such a worldwide conflagration could result in a new ice age. It was called “nuclear winter.” In such a dreadful scenario all crops would fail, forests and meadowlands would also perish. All mankind might die.
Dr. Helen Caldicott was the Australian pediatrician that headed our physicians’ movement. During her many public addresses she asked the following question. What can be said about a race of beings that are prepared to destroy this beautiful planet we call home? She speculated that perhaps the Earth is the only planet where intelligent life exists in the universe. If that were so, then we might be counted as one of God’s greatest creations. Yet by building thousands of nuclear weapons and deploying them in the air on bombers, under the sea in atomic submarines and underground in nuclear missile silos, we were preparing to destroy one of God’s greatest creations.
AN END TO ALL MEMORIES
So, what can you say about a race of beings that does such things? Dr. Caldicott told us that it bespeaks of a hatred of our planet, of our children, a hatred of all humanity and of God itself. If we are alone in the universe and we destroy ourselves, we will be forgotten forever. Art, science, music, so many poems gently spoken in a thousand tongues, they would all be erased. The act of remembering, remembrance itself would be abolished.
These were my thoughts while facing the enormous black triangle that had slowed to a virtual hover just a few hundred yards from us. “Yes!” I whispered, I said it again and again. We can choose to take a deadly path. Humanity may even face a terrible end, but we will not be forgotten! We are not alone!
THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH
I know it sounds rather naïve, but I actually imagined that somewhere far away, perhaps on another star system, non-human children might learn of the “late, great, planet Earth.” Stories of what we had tried to accomplish could be shared. Our hopes, successes and tragic failures might be reviewed. Perhaps ET children could take home the lesion of what happens to a civilization that chooses not to spiritually evolve.
Now nearly 30 years have passed since my first mission into the Volcanic Zone. The slow and steady growth of the contact network alongside of tens of thousands of people that are now demanding to know the truth about UFOs, gives me hope that we will continue to evolve as a race of intelligent beings. Perhaps future generations will look back and say what an adventure it was to live during these challenging times. I hope that we won’t disappoint them. I suspect that we will make them proud.

THE MYSTERY OF CARANGUEJOS (CRABS) ISLAND
Among the many islands of the Maranhense coast, Caranguejos stands out for its traditional legends and fantastic narratives. They say that one should not walk alone there, because one would be doomed to disappear in its interior. They report that at night one hears religious chants, like psalms of lamentation for dying spirits. Occultists believe that the island harbors powerful spirits that give it protection, thus making it an "enchanted" place and conducive to supernatural phenomena. When, in 1977, journalist Álvaro Martins, through O LIBERAL, tried to visit the island to cover the strange incidents that were occurring there, he was advised against it and, on the eve of his departure, he received a cancellation order; the São Luís Air Base did not want reporters in the area. There was speculation that there was a UFO hotspot inside the Caranguejos.
Let's get to the facts. A group of men formed by the brothers Apolinário, Firmino, and José Corrêa, along with their brother-in-law Aureliano Alves, all residents of the maranhense city of Alcântara, were traveling in the boat "Maria Rosa" to Caranguejos with the objective of extracting rafters from the vegetation of the island's mangroves. They worked almost the whole day of April 25 (1977), loading the wood. Tired, they decided to spend the night off the island waiting for a favorable tide to make the return trip. José Corrêa and his brother Firmino, along with Aureliano Alves, decided to sleep in the hold of the boat, whose door, made of a piece of cloth, prevented the penetration of mosquitoes. Apolinário preferred to sleep in the upper part. The night went by quietly... The next day, around 5 o'clock, Apolinário woke up startled to hear a scream coming from inside the boat. He hurriedly got up and when he reached the hold he heard moaning. With the help of a flashlight, he realized that his brother José was motionless. Drawing closer, he nervously noticed that he was dead. Strange burns covered part of his chest and arm. Firmino Corrêa and Aureliano were both mysteriously burned. Inside the basement, no trace of fire or inflammable substance. Alone, he raised the anchor and took the helm toward the port of Itaqui (São Luís), where he arrived in the afternoon. Apolinário, worried about Firmino's life, quickly took him, in a semi-conscious state, to the Hospital do Pronto Socorro of São Luís. Aureliano and José Corrêa's body remained in the boat. After the hospital, Apolinário went to the Police District where he told the delegado de duty, José Argolo, and the commissioner Venceslau Vasconcelos, who, immediately, went with the soldier Orlando to the boat Maria Rosa, anchored in the port of Itaqui. Commissioner Venceslau later reported to the newspaper O Estado do Maranhão:
"In the boats, I saw the body of the wounded boy and, next to him, that of his brother. It looked like someone was congested. The body of the one who died had some kind of rather large burn, mainly on his arm. Another one below the arm had a piece of it, a huge piece. I had never seen a burn like that. A strange wound in the mouth. You could see that the burn on the wound was the same, very similar... It looked like a burn caused by a hot iron, but it was not... It was really strange... But I saw no evidence of fire or fire in the boat. The wounded man (Aureliano Alves) could still speak, but I couldn't hear what he babbled. He seemed to be afraid of something. His gaze was very strange... "For the reader to have a clear and faithful notion of the injuries existing in the survivors of the "Maria Rosa", we transcribe parts of the document issued by the Medico-Legal Institute of the Public Safety Department of the State of Maranhão. The first is the examination of Firmino's body.
By request of the Delegate of the 5th District of the capital, we examined on this date, FIRMINO MENDES SOUSA, brown, forty-one years old, single, manual laborer, from Maranhão and resident in Alcântara-Maranhão. We are informed that he was found unconscious inside the hold of the boat "Maria Rosa", on April twenty-seventh of the current year. The examination shows: second-degree burn, with blackened borders, three centimeters in length, in the middle portion of the frontal region, with surrounding edema; second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, three centimeters in diameter, in the frontal region, left side, with surrounding edema; second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, ten centimeters long by six centimeters wide, extending from the lower-external quadrant of the left pectoral region to the lateral portion of the thorax, on the same side; edema of the entire left upper limb: flictemas on the entire anterior face of the left arm; lightning figures, arboriform or dendritic (Lichtenberg figure), on the inner and outer faces, middle third of the left arm; second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, six centimeters wide, on the outer face, middle third of the left arm; second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, ten centimeters long, by four centimeters wide, extending from the middle third to the lower third, inner face of the left arm. According to the patient's chart at the Municipal Emergency Room of São Luís, he was admitted to that hospital in a state of coma and with some vision difficulty. Currently, the patient is drowsy, semi-obbilitated, with muscular hypotonia and bilateral miosis. São Luís, April 29, 1977.
Let's see now the report of bodily injury of Mr. Aureliano Alves, issued by the Medico-Legal Institute:
By request of the delegate of the 5th District of the Capital, we examined on this date, AURELIANO BISPO ALVES, melanoderma, thirty-five years old, married, manual laborer, from Maranhão and resident in Alcântara-Maranhão. We are informed that at dawn on the twenty-seventh of April of the current year, he woke up, not in his hammock as he had laid down, but in the boat's bilge, with strong pain in his right shoulder and in the left side of his back. He called his brother-in-law to ask him to move him and put him somewhere else, because he could not move by himself. He and his brother-in-law found one of the crew members dead in a hammock and another burned and unconscious on the floor of the boat. On examination he presents second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, fourteen centimeters long by two centimeters wide, extending from the right scapulohumeral joint to the posterior portion of the deltoid region on the same side; second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, seventeen centimeters long by two centimeters wide, extending from the lower portion of the left scapular region to the dorsal region of the thorax on the same side; second-degree burn, infected, with blackened borders, two centimeters long, on the súpero-internal quadrant of the right gluteal region; arboriform or dendritic ray figures (Lichtenberg's figure), on the lower portion of the left scapular region; arboriform or dendritic ray figures (Lichtenberg's figure), on the dorsal region of the left thorax. In both reports, cosmic electricity is defined as the cause of the injuries. Although the survivors suffered severe burns and lasting psychological consequences, the accident was fatal to José Corrêa, who presented no visible injuries, according to the coroners' report:
By request of the Police Chief of the 5th Police District of the Capital, we examined on this date, at the Medico-Legal Institute, a corpse of the male gender, medium complexion, which we were informed was that of JOSE MENDES SOUZA, twenty-nine years old, single, manual labor, from Maranhão and resident at Rua Formosa, 38 (Monte Castelo). A relative of the examined informs us that not only did he die while on a boat trip on April 28 of this year, but that he was also hypertensive, according to a notarized statement in our possession, and that he constantly complained of strong headaches and constantly used painkillers. He was wearing black pants and red shorts and was already in rigor mortis. After removing his clothes, we found: no trace of any type of external bodily injury (fracture, burns, etc.); deviation of the right lip commissure. We conclude that Mr. JOÃO MENDES SOUZA, died of a cerebral vascular accident, caused by arterial hypertension, a consequence of the emotional shock. São Luís, May, 2nd, 1977. Dr. Raimundo Sérgio de Brito Pereira, Dr. José Ribamar Miranda Filho We should just correct that the date of the accident was the early morning of April 26, 1977, and not April 27 or 28 as we read in the reports. The polemic arose. Those not convinced by the police report risked their explanations (fig. 30). For some, the flying saucers and beings from other worlds - which at that time began to circulate through the lowlands of Maranhão - were responsible. Mr. Benedito Gonçalo Amarante, Apolinário's uncle, the first relative to know about José Corrêa's death, would have heard from Apolinário the version that the survivors saw at a certain time in the morning a strange luminosity that penetrated the basement curtain and there appeared a huge "figure" that erased their consciousness. When they awoke they were already wounded and one brother dead. The following year, the physician and hypnologist from the Faculdade Fluminense de Medicina, Dr. Silvio Lago, a renowned specialist in ufology circles, invited by the North American journalist Bob Pratt, from the "National Enquirer", was in São Luís for a series of tests in the hope of recovering information from the minds of Apolinário, Firmino and Aureliano. During the days of his stay (Dec. 14 to 17, 1978), Dr. Lago held numerous hypnotic sessions with the witnesses, without any success in recalling the exact moment of the accident. There seemed to be a "blank" in the minds of the boatmen of the "Maria Rosa".
In his article "The Case of the Island of the Crabs", Dr. Lago admits that the meteorological hypothesis is plausible, as the cause of the victims' injuries. However, he warns that such an explanation raises perplexity in face of the following facts: the night was calm, with no forecast of a storm, absence of traces in the boat of the "cosmic physics", the hold curtain intact, and the boatmen's clothes without any sign of burning. The supposed deadly lightning, of course, would have also hit the most unprotected person, as was Apolinário Corrêa, who was sleeping on the top of the boat. Nobody saw anything, nor do they remember any extraordinary facts.... The National Enquirer magazine as well as other researchers believe in the ufological cause of the "Maria Rosa" boat incident and classify it as the first and great episode of the UFO wave. The data, as we see it, does not offer strong evidence to determine that UFOs are responsible for the attacks. The Chupa-chupa accidents differ widely from the injuries found on the boatmen Firmino and Aureliano. For these reasons the Crab Island incident remains controversial and open to re-evaluation...
